CES 2013: Hands on: Samsung Series 7 Ultra

Samsung showed off its updates Series 7 Ultrabook line-up at CES 2013 and we were impressed with what we saw.

The Samsung Series 7 Ultra is a new range for Samsung which embraces the era of Windows 8; manufacturers have had to make the touchscreen switchover, which is exactly what Samsung has done with its laptop.

As well as this it has beefed up the Series 7's innards, but many to still keep it light and portable. On board is a full HD display â€" we demoed some video and pictures on the device and the results were nice and crisp. Even under the stark glare of show-floor lights the colour details looked lovely and rich.

Given that there's 300nit worth of brightness within the screen this is what you would expect. There's also a 178-degree viewing angle so even if you are holding your laptop in an awkward way, you will be able to view things fine on the screen.

Under the hood there's a number of choices you can make. You can choose which Core I processor you want â€" either i5 or i7 and have SSD storage up to 256GB.

Being that it is an Ultrabook, start up time on the Series 7 Ultra is nice a speedy. Samsung has got out its stopwatch and clocked it at six seconds.

When it comes to connectivity, there's three lots of USB hubs, LAN and a slim security port. And memory is c ounted at (up to) 16GB.

Samsung has given the Series 7 Ultra a bare metal finish, much like its Chronos companion, and the laptop is extra thin. Dimensions wise you are looking at: 324 x 224 x 18.9mm.

The screen is a decent size, at 13.3-inches, and the 10-point touch system is a joy to use. If you don't fancy prodding the screen there is a non-touchscreen option however.

While battery life is less than the Chronos, at 8 hours, this is still a great device for on-the-go computing and one of the most stylish laptops we have seen.
