Opinion: Sony's PlayStation 4 is a thinly disguised PC

Sony may not have had an actual box to display. But it has revealed the innards of its next-gen PlayStation 4 games console. And it's pure PC.

The CPU is an AMD design with eight x86-64, low-power Jaguar cores, while the graphics core is also from AMD and derived from its latest Radeon HD family and roughly equivalent to a 7850 graphics board. But does that matter? Possibly. Here's why.

In really simple terms (and this assumes leaked info on the next console from Microsoft turns out to be correct), games development just got a whole lot easier.

From now on, you'll develop on one platform â€" the PC â€" and simply r ecompile for PlayStation or Xbox. OK, it'll be a bit more complicated than that in practice. But the basic notion is correct.

And it puts the PC into an interesting position in the gaming hierarchy.

Lowest common denominator

The feeble specs of existing games consoles is easily the biggest drag on game development. CPU and GPU specs grab the headlines and both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 are looking horribly outdated by both metrics.

But more than anything it's memory space and bandwidth that's the biggest bummer. Current consoles don't have nearly enough of either and it makes life very hard for developers attempting to realise large, realistic game worlds.

The good news is that the new PS4 is a massive step forward. It packs 8GB of super fast GDDR5 memory and 1 76GB/s of raw memory bandwidth.

But the really interesting bit involves the fact that the CPU and GPU are squeezed together on a single chip and in terms of memory have a truly unified address space.

At last, a powerful APU

In other words, the PS4's chip is world's first truly high performance APU or Accelerated Processing Unit. It's AMD's vision for the future of the PC. Only it's arrived in a console first.

In theory, that lets you do lots of exciting things in terms of sharing code and work across the CPU and GPU cores.

Whether games developers will actually take advantage of that is another question. But it does make the PS4 more interesting than the thinly-disguised PC with mediocre performance that it first appears to be.

Instead, it's a truly heterogeneous computing platform, a system-on-a-chip design that could shake up the way modern games are made.

Given that a lot of the earlier attention (and I include myself in that) w as on the relatively disappointing specification of the AMD-sourced CPU cores, that's really good news.

At the very least, the improvements in memory performance should encourage game devs to be miles more ambitious regards the scope and scale of worlds they create.

What does it all mean for the PC?

Exactly what it all means for the PC is harder to judge. Will AMD bring out a similarly powerful APU for use in conventional PCs?

That was certainly its plan. But more recently AMD's attention has shifted towards ultra mobile computing. And, frankly, assuming AMD will survive long enough to ship PlayStation-like APUs for regular PCs, even if that's still the intention, is a bit of a stretch.

Despite that, I'm optimistic. The PS4 and the next Xbox will lift the standard of games development. And the close hardware relationship of the PC can only make it easier for games to be ported across and even improved to take advantage of the power of the PC.< /p>

Because whatever happens, the PC will remain the most powerful gaming platform for the foreseeable future. The only difference now is that the consoles are more closely related than ever before.

AMD aims to sell modified PlayStation 4 APU for PCs

The PlayStation 4's components were only divulged by Sony a few days ago, but already AMD is revealing plans for its architecture beyond the game console.

Speaking with the Inquirer, AMD's Head of Marketing John Taylor revealed the company's plans to release a scaled down version of the accelerated processing unit (APU) for PCs.

While the PC version of the APU won't be as powerful as the chip inside the PS4, it will be based very closely on the AMD Jaguar Sony is currently touting for its unseen console.

Covering all bases

The decision shouldn't cause concern for any Sony faithful worried that the proprietary tech in the PlayStation 4 will be making its way into the wild.

Taylor made sure to stipulate t he APU released for PCs won't have the same number of cores or the same computing capabilities as found in the PS4.

"Everything that Sony has shared in that single chip is AMD [intellectual property], but we have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market," Taylor added.

According to Taylor, the PS4's APU is "by far the most powerful APU" AMD has ever built, and that the chips arriving later this year won't be capable of "that level of sheer number of cores, sheer number of teraflops."

Curiously, the Xbox 720 is also rumored to use the same x86 chip that was revealed for the PS4, but since that console hasn't actually been announced yet, it's impossible to know what sort of chip the n ext Xbox will run yet.

It's easy to imagine using Google Glass for hands-free directions, phone calls, video recording and more, but JetBlue took it one step further in a Google+ post this week.

The airline piggybacked the #ifihadglass social media campaign to remind its fans that it's the coolest airline around, publishing several pictures of imaginative ways to use Google Glass in and around an airport.

The #ifihadglass hashtag was spawned by Google to encourage, and Google Glass hopefuls used the hashtag to en ter for a chance to win the opportunity to do Google's marketing for it.

If that sounds a little twisted to you, JetBlue's hypothetical Google Glass uses might just make you feel better.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

JetBlue posted on Google+, "#ifihadglass we would continue to help the world view air travel through a whole new lens," and included several mock-ups of Google Glass being used around an airport.

First, Google Glass could display in real-time how much space is left in a parking structure when y ou're driving up.

It could display your flight status without you having to search frantically for a TV screen in the airport, then point out available power outlets while you're waiting to board.

After the flight, Google Glass could tell you where your baggage will be and when it will arrive.

Finally, JetBlue contends that Google Glass could estimate your cab fare outside the airport.

We have a winner

JetBlue stands a respectable chance of taking the crown in the #ifihadglass campaign with these ideas, though no doubt if it really wanted a prototype Google would probably supply it one regardless - especially with applications like these in mind.

In related news, the airline posted a comment response to a request that it adds these features to smartphone apps before looking to future tech like Google Glass.

"We're always looking at features to add to our Android and iOS apps," JetBlue wrote, "and love the idea of streamlining the experience, not just from gate to gate, but from door to door."

It added that mobile boarding passes for Android are "nearly here."

Veteran YouTubers with iOS devices will be happy to learn the most recent update (v. 1.2.1) to the YouTube app finally adds "send to TV" functionality.

The update will allow iPhone 5, iPad 4, and iPod touch users to pair their mobile devices to a television set equipped with Google TV, which will make it possible to control content streamed to the TV from any compatible d evice.

The feature was already available on Android, but at least now there's one more feature iOS users can claim as their own.

Stream line

Though there are only a handful of Google TV compatible sets on the market, there are even more manufacturers readying such devices for later this year.

Fortunately, if you don't have a compatible HDTV, the YouTube app also allows you to pair your mobile device with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, though the process isn't as simple on the gaming consoles.

The new "send to TV" feature even allows for anyone else on the same Wi-Fi network to control what's streaming, or add new cont ent to a playlist.

The addition of iOS devices for this feature makes a great deal of sense for YouTube, as more than 25 percent of its views now come from mobile users.

With companies like Bang and Olufsen, LG, Panasonic, Sony, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, and Western Digital all onboard the Google TV train, we're sure to see even mobile-to-TV cross compatibility take place in the future.

Game pirates, consider this your shot across the bow. Sony is looking for ways to figure out who you are, and is looking at game loading times as one way to pinpoint your mischievous activities.

According to a patent filed by Sony, and discoverd by NeoGaf, gaming hardware could benchmark the loading times for media (both digital and physical) and block users who's times fall outside what is considered to be within "an acceptable threshhold".

"For example, if an authentic game title is distributed exclusively on BDs having a total benchmark load time of 45 seconds on a game console BD drive, the acceptable range of load times could be from 40 to 50 seconds. Thus, a total measured title load time of 4 seconds would be outside of the acceptable range of total load times for a legitimate media type."

Keep your receipts

There's no indication in the patent filing to what "block user" refers to, whether Sony plans to excommunicate these naughty boys and girls from the PSN all together, or just block the execution of the game files for that particular pirated title.

Whether Sony could manage to make this system fool-proof is anyone's guess, though it is easy to imagine the unending forum posts complaining about Sony blocking users who were attempting to play legitimately acquired games.

There's also no firm indication Sony will forge ahead with this anti-piracy measure with the PS4, though it wouldn't be the only controversial decision Sony will make if it does. There is still loads of questions needing answers about software on the next-gen console, including whether Sony intends to let gamers play second hand games, or not.
